Chekhov Literature Museum

Taganrog was founded by Peter the Great in 1698 on the shore of the Azov Sea. It served as the first and for a long while the largest Russian Naval Base and also was the first Russian town built on a regular plan. At one time the reformer tsar even intended to transfer the state capital to Taganrog. After Sevastopol was founded in 1783 Taganrog lost its military-strategic status but remained an international trading harbour with a flourishing merchant class.
It was a merchant family that a future glorious literary artist, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, was born into in 1860. His education in Taganrog men's classical gymnasium, the oldest one in the South of Russia, has become an important stage in his identity, mindset and style formation. In the gymnasium Chekhov published comic magazines, wrote short stories, and created his first large-scale drama “Platonov”.
In 1975 the gymnasium building constructed upon the project of an Italian architect Francesco Boffo in a style of Russian provincial classicism became a home to Chekhov Literature Museum. The exposition depicts the writer’s career from the very childhood and throughout his life which is a unique case for a Russian museum dedicated to Anton Chekhov.
