Petersburg Avant-garde Museum ("The House of Matiushin")

The Petersburg Avant-garde Museum ("The House of Matiushin") is located in a wood house on Professor Popov Street (Pesochnaya), in one of the oldest districts of St. Petersburg - on the Petrogradskaya side. When Matiushin and Guro moved into the wooden house on Pesochnaya Street, standing amid an old, verdant park, there apartment soon became the nucleus of the avant-garde movement in St. Petersburg, the eye of a storm jf new sensibilities, new vision, and new understanding of what art was all about. it was here that the editorial board of Zhuravl held its meetings; Guro, Matiushin and Malevich created their art; Kruchenykh, Khlebnikov and Kamensky held poetry and prose readings; Matiushin invented his "quarter tone" music; and it was here that the Futurist plays Victory over the San and Vladimir Mayakovsky were conceived. (According to a legend, Vladimir Mayakovsky wrote his famous drama in house on Pesochnaya).
